Why I love Rothy’s & a guide to buying them
If you follow me in Instagram, you’ve probably noticed that most of my work outfits are paired with brightly colored flats called Rothy’s. I first discovered the brand the way most people probably do, through ads on Facebook. I was intrigued, but wary of spending so much money on shoes for work. Prior to Rothy’s, I mostly wore Crocs bow flats (they sound ugly, bit promise they’re not bad, see a pic here), sandals when it was hot, and boots when it was colder. I always felt like I never had the right professional shoes for an outfit, and as someone who loves shoes, that felt weird.
In July 2018, about a month before school started, I decided to try Rothy’s for the first time. Yes, they were a bit of money, but the sustainability aspect and style, plus the fact that they are washable and my flats always stunk, finally won me over. In case you haven’t seen an ad, Rothy’s are made from recycled water bottles, made into thread, and woven into shoes. Our overuse of single use plastics is a cause that is very important to me, so armed with a $20 off a first purchase code from a friend (you can grab one here) I ordered my first pair, Aquamarine points, in my regular size. They came and felt… okay.
The same week they came, I found the group Rothy’s Addicts on Facebook, and by reading posts, started to realize that most people size up a half size to a full size in the pointed Rothy’s. Since they’re made from water bottles, they do not stretch out, and the pointed shape means sizing up can give your toes the room they may need. I exchanged for a 1/2 size larger, wore them to work, and realized my big toe was still rubbing.
I ended up ordering another pair of Aquamarine points in a full size bigger than my regular shoe size, and suddenly it was like a whole world opened up. They were incredible. Like walking on nothing. My feet were so happy. I sold the smaller Aquamarines in a Rothy’s FB group and the addiction was born.
I have now tried every single style Rothy’s makes and found the styles that work best for me. The great thing is that Rothy’s has an easy returns and exchanges process, so even though figuring out your sizing and which styles you like can take a little time, the process is worth it. Once you do, I can guarantee you won’t look back.
Here is my experience with all the styles Rothy’s makes. For reference, my “street” or regular size shoe is an 8 or 8.5. I tend to get a 9 in sneakers for the gym because I wear orthotics.
The Flat: I love flats. They’re cushiony and wonderful. Some of my older flats are an 8.5, but I definitely need a 9 in the newer styles (they made the insoles thicker). Flats are the least expensive style, so they’re a great intro into the world of Rothy’s.
The Point: My fave! I just love how classic they are. Points are tricky for me. Some of my points are a 9 and some are a 9.5. It depends on the color and stretchiness of the weave. Like I said, Rothy’s has easy returns and exchanges, so I usually try the 9.5 and only get the 9 if the 9.5 is flopping off.
The Loafer: Loafers never want to fit me right. Others claim they are the most comfortable style and that they feel like a hug for their feet. For me, they tend to fit tight across the bridge of my foot. I have a 9 and 9.5 in loafers, but I likely will not get any more beyond the three I have because I just don’t like them as much as the other styles. If you’re new to Rothy’s, try them though. Like I said, for many they are their favorite!
The Sneaker: I didn’t have good luck with the sneaker, but again, some people love them the most. I may try them again when the right color/ pattern comes out. My size is an 8.5 in the sneaker I think as my heel kept slipping out of the 9.
The Chelsea: The. Most. Comfortable. I am seriously in love with the newest style. I recently wore my Wildcat ones on a trip to NYC and walked all over the city in them for days and was so comfy. My feet never hurt and I felt very stylish in them. I get a 9 and wear with socks and they’re perfect.
I am not sure how many pairs of Rothy’s I own, but it is enough to tell you that I have never liked a shoe company so much in my life. Not only do they make amazing shoes, but they treat their customers well and always strive to come out with new colors, patterns, and styles to keep us guessing. I would say the only negative thing about Rothy’s is that they’re sometimes limited! Colors do retire and once they’re gone, the only way to get them is second hand or if Rothy’s happens to bring them back during a “Vote it Back” campaign.
If you have never tried Rothy’s, grab a $20 off code here and try a pair. I guarantee you won’t regret it! And if you have any Rothy’s questions, just let me know!
