InLiteralLife May 2021: What I bought, watched, & thought about

I can’t believe May is over, but at the same time, I don’t know if I have ever been so excited for a month of school to pass. Normally, our school year finishes at the end of May, but due to a late start caused by the pandemic, we are going until June 18th with the kids, which feels like an eternity. It is extra hard because all of the state and advanced course exams are over AND the district canceled finals, so both the students and teachers sort of feel like we are just spinning our wheels. Also, we have the shortest summer ever so we can “get back on track,” with teachers returning August 4th and students having their first day August 10th. I will be on maternity leave, but this still affects me in terms of the sick days I will have to use.

This month has also meant a lot of confusion regarding the pandemic. My husband and I are fully vaccinated, but we are still very weary of the new CDC guidelines that say that vaccinated people can go without masks. I’ve talked about this on the ‘gram, but I don’t really trust people. I have a feeling that there are many who will lie and go without masks even though they are not vaccinated, especially since the anti-vaxx and anti-mask communities seem to overlap a ton. This makes going out in public to stores kind of scary right now. I was at Target the other day and a one of the employees at the customer service desk wasn’t wearing a mask and it made me feel weird. I was grateful when I was called up by a different, masked employee. For the foreseeable future, I am going to continue my double masking or wearing a KN95. When the new school year starts, masks are slated to be optional, but students are coming back at full capacity. This seems like a recipe for disaster to me, but I hope I am wrong.

On a positive note, we had our baby shower this month (check out my recap post here) and celebrated my first Mother’s Day!! I can’t wait until our baby girl is born and I can hold her in my arms.

What I Bought

In this final stage of pregnancy (I am 33 weeks as I write this) I no longer want to wear pants, LOL. It has sent me on a buying frenzy of allll the dresses. I am mostly staying away from anything that is specifically maternity, and opting instead for styles that will work now and after the baby comes. With only approximately 8 weeks left, I don’t want spend money on anything I won’t wear for a good long time to come. I also got this amazing gold shimmer vase and my husband surprised me with gorgeous flowers for it.

Camo Nursing Dress/ Tropical Maxi Dress (comes in a bunch of prints and colors)/ Blue Tie Dye Midi Dress (more colors available)/ Orange and Pink Tie Dye Midi Dress (more colors available)/ Striped Midi Skirt/ Striped Swing Dress (also comes in a bunch of prints and colors)/ Off The Shoulder Ruffle Maternity Dress (lots of colors too)/ Colorblock Maxi Dress (tons of color options)/ Rooted Pots

What I Watched

  • The Falcon & The Winter Solider on Disney+: The husband and I love all things Marvel, so we were super excited for this series to start, especially after how amazing WandaVision ended up being. Although not as creative and suspenseful as WandaVision, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier was absolutely phenomenal. It was traditional Marvel superhero magic, mixed with a fearless take on the history of racism and power in our country and law enforcement. It was action packed, funny and dramatic in the way that only Marvel seems to be able to capture, and had us wanting more every week. I was sad when it ended.
  • Fauda on Netflix: We got into this show at the recommendation of my brother-in-law after telling him how much we loved Jack Ryan and hoped a new season was coming soon. The show is in Hebrew, but is dubbed in English for Netflix. Given the intense conflict between Israel and Palestine at the moment, this show is really interesting to watch. It essentially follows an Israeli special forces team as they try to apprehend a Palestinian terrorist leader. We didn’t realize there were three seasons when we started, so that has also been a nice surprise. We are currently a few episodes into season two and it has been really good!
  • The Vow on HBO: I listened to a deep dive on the NXIVM cult on the Be There in Five Podcast without having watched the documentary The Vow first, and while Kate Kennedy did an incredible job on the episode, I definitely wish I had watched the doc first because I was confused for a lot of her references (I didn’t realize beforehand that I would need to have watched it and that is totally on me). So I went back and watched the nine episode series and I was enthralled. I have always found cults to be fascinating, and the structure of how this all worked and how so many women got tricked into doing insane things is super interesting to me. I highly recommend.
  • The Mitchells vs. the Machines on Netflix: Listen, this is a kids moved and we freaking LOVED it!! This was made by the same studio that did Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, so if you enjoyed that one, you will definitely like this. It is great to watch as a family or as full grown adults with no (born) children! Definitely check it out.

I hope you enjoyed my first monthly recap post! I definitely want to do these consistently as I really miss blogging regularly.

Cheers!

xx,

Camile
